Independent Adoption Center Profiles Birthparents, Adoptive Parents, Adopted Children, and Volunteers: This Month, Meet Volunteer Jeana 15 March, 2007 – Pleasant Hill, CA. Each month, IAC – a nationally recognized nonprofit education and counseling agency – will present a profile of birthparents, adoptive parents, or children who have been adopted. A pioneer in open adoption, Independent Adoption Center (IAC) is nationally recognized as a leader in the field having facilitated almost 4,000 successful adoptions in 35 states. Headquartered in the Northern California town of Pleasant Hill, IAC has southern California offices in Los Angeles, and also operates centers in Indiana, North Carolina and Georgia. Featured for the month of March, 2007 is volunteer Jeana. Jeana is a student of psychology at JFK University in Walnut Creek. She decided to volunteer at the Independent Adoption Center in order to gain insight into an area of the human psyche that she had not yet experienced. “Not knowing much about open adoption prior to volunteering at IAC,” Jeana said, “I can now sincerely respect the work and dedication that the staff provide to the birth parents, the adoptive parents, and ultimately, the adopted child.” “With open adoption, the children are raised knowing they are loved by many, and they benefit greatly from the interlacing of the lives of their birth parents and adoptive parents.” Jeana, who has been volunteering at IAC for four months, will graduate from JFKU this fall. She is still deciding on the direction her career might be headed and says, “children are definitely my passion and learning more about adoption counseling has peaked my interest in pursuing such a career.” Sharon Fitzgerald, Advertising and Marketing Director, said, “we are truly fortunate to have Jeana volunteering with us. She brings great skills and passion to the organization and has quickly learned all aspects of open adoption.”
As a nonprofit organization, the IAC’s mission is to create open adoptions: that is, a completely voluntary adoption where birth parents select the family they want to adopt their child. It is a viable and accessible alternative to untimely pregnancy throughout the United States. IAC will celebrate its 25 anniversary in May 2007.For more information, please call 1-800-877-6736 or visit www.adoptionhelp.org.
